24 Day Tour of the USA - The Grand Southern Tour

Southern delicacies include chicken and ribs, biscuits and gravy, and more curiously, Elvis’ favorite Graceland snack, a peanut butter and banana concoction. But here’s food for thought: Our equally eclectic travel menu of mouth-watering southern destinations, nicely sandwiched between prime left- and right-coast stop-overs. Get a taste of Texas, full servings of Memphis and New Orleans, and a naughty nibble of Las Vegas, before a final bite in the Big Apple, New York City.

Day 1 - Los Angeles (Anaheim) to Las Vegas: You’ll have plenty of time to meet your new Contiki friends en route to the city of non stop excitement and glittering lights, Las Vegas. Our Las Vegas night tour travels down The Strip, home to many of the world’s largest hotels and casinos. The city tour ends with a showing of the Fremont Street Experience, the world’s greatest collective light show. After Fremont Street, why not take in a famous Las Vegas cabaret show? Hotel (D)

Day 2 - Las Vegas at Leisure:
The day is yours to take in this exciting city. Perhaps try your luck at the tables or slot machines at one of the famous casinos – Caesars Palace, The Mirage, MGM Grand, or Luxor Pyramid. Maybe you’ll want to explore some of the attractions at the newer hotels – Mandalay Bay, Bellagio, or The Venetian. Feeling adventurous? Try the Big Shot at the top of the Stratosphere and catapult to the height of 327 metres (1,081 feet). Great shopping, concerts, fabulous restaurants, and 24-hour nightlife – Las Vegas is truly a city that never sleeps! Hotel

Day 3 - Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon:
We depart Nevada this morning and enter the state of Arizona. This afternoon we arrive at one of the world’s seven natural wonders, The Grand Canyon. Our modern cabins are located inside the National Park, just a short walk to the rim of The Grand Canyon. Cabin (B,D)

Day 4 - Grand Canyon at Leisure:
At over 1.6km (1 mile) deep and averaging 16km (10 miles) wide, the Grand Canyon is truly an awe inspiring spectacle. We have the whole day to hike and explore the area. Maybe take a sensational helicopter flight over the canyon (optional).Cabins

Day 5 - Grand Canyon to Cortez via Monument Valley:
This morning we travel across the Southwest seeing the Painted Desert as we enter the Navajo Indian Reservation. This afternoon we will see the spectacular rock formations of Monument Valley – a favourite location for American western movies. Join us for an off road trip for close up views of the mesas, buttes, and plateaus that make this area so famous. Our hotel tonight is in Cortez, located in the beautiful state of Colorado. Day 6 - Cortez to Albuquerque:
Today we’ll experience the spectacular Rocky Mountains as we travel through Colorado. This morning we’ll stop in Durango, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy an optional whitewater rafting trip (seasonal) down the Animas River. Or take an optional jeep ride into the back country of the Rocky Mountains (seasonal), whichever is more to your liking. Then it's onto the state of New Mexico, and our overnight accommodation in the stat's largest city of Albuquerque.Hotel (B,D)

Day 7 - Albuquerque to Amarillo:
This morning you will have the opportunity to go hot air ballooning in Albuquerque, home of the world’s largest balloon fiesta every autumn. Then it’s off to downtown Santa Fe, where you’ll have time for lunch. We then depart for the Lone Star State of Texas. Everything is BIG in Texas! This afternoon we will visit the world’s only Cadillac Ranch – a tribute to Route 66 & the great American automobile. Tonight’s accommodation and dinner in Amarillo are both true examples of real Texas culture! Hotel (D)

Day 8 - Amarillo to Dallas:
Today we make our way to the city of Dallas. Upon arrival enjoy a city tour and orientation. Tonight you will have the opportunity to go to the popular Mesquite Rodeo (seasonal).Hotel (B)

Day 9 - Dallas at Leisure:
This morning we will visit Texas Stadium (when available), home of the Dallas Cowboys. This afternoon, tour the John F. Kennedy Sixth Floor Museum, located on the sixth floor of the former Texas School Book Depository building, and learn the legacy of America’s 35th president. Hotel (B,D)

Day 10 - Dallas to Memphis:
Our first stop today is the city of Texarkana, and you can choose to eat lunch in either Texas or Arkansas, since the city is actually split into two different states. We will also make a quick stop at the Arkansas Capital Building in Little Rock, the city Bill Clinton called home for a number of years. Upon arrival into Memphis, there will be a short city orientation. memphis is the Home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock 'n Roll and tonight we'll head ot to Beale street whenre the action starts. Day 11 - Memphis at Leisure:
"We’re going to Graceland," this morning as we visit the private home of Elvis Presley. Your tour includes both the mansion and the grounds. You will also have a chance to see Elvis’ grave and the eternal flame in the Meditation Garden. This afternoon, we will make a stop at the Civil Rights Museum, as well as famous Sun Studios. Enjoy the rest of your time exploring this famous city. Hotel

Day 12 - Memphis to New Orleans:
We travel through the state of Mississippi this morning on our way to one of America’s wildest cities - New Orleans. upon arrival into The Big Easy you'll have the chance to take an optonal airboat trip along Alligator Alley on the Louisiana Swamps. We will waste no time tonight as we head down to Bourbon Street and experience the nightlife that makes this city famous. Clubs, cafes, jazz bars - you name it New Orleans has it! Hotel (B)

Day 13 - New Orleans at Leisure:
A free day to explore this historic and fascinating city. Explore the Garden District, search for bargains in the French Market, sample a beignet and coffee at Café du Monde, or have your fortune told in Jackson Square. Tonight there is the chance to take a dinner cruise on the Mississippi River aboard a genuine riverboat. Hotel (B)

Day 14 - New Orleans to Pensacola:
We travel through the state of Alabama this morning on our way to Pensacola, a lively beach community located on the Florida Panhandle. You will have most of the day to enjoy the white sands of the Gulf of Mexico. There is the opportunity to rent a jet ski, or get into a game of football or volleyball on the beach. Hotel (B,D)

Day 15 - Pensacola to Orlando:
After a lunch stop in the capital city of Tallahassee, it’s off to Orlando, America’s most visited city. Hotel (B,D)

Day 16 and 17 - Orlando at Leisure:
We have two full days in this mecca of theme parks and entertainment. Your choices include Sea World, Universal Studios and of course the Disney World complex including The Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Centre and Disney MGM Studios. For nightlife, why not try Disney’s Pleasure Island or Universal’s City Walk. Hotel (1B)

Day 18 - Orlando to St. Augustine via the Kennedy Space Centre:
You will have most of the day to explore Kennedy Space Center. Your tour includes the Saturn V rocket, the history of the Apollo moon landing flights and views of the Space Shuttle Launch pads. We then head north to St. Augustine, the oldest city in North America, where we will make our home for the night. Hotel (B,D)

Day 19th - St. Augustine to Savannah:
You will have free time this morning to explore the old Spanish streets and sites of St. Augustine. We then travel into the state of Georgia to the waterfront town of Savannah. After an orientation tour of this historic town, there is time to stroll past the historic homes and gardens, and through the city squares that provide Savannah with it’s southern charm. Tonight, experience this city’s exciting nightlife along the banks of the Savannah River. Hotel (B)

Day 20 - Savannah to Raleigh:
Today we begin our journey north through South Carolina, on our way to the "Tar Heel" state of North Carolina. Tonight’s hotel is located in the state capital of Raleigh. Hotel (D)

Day 21 - Raleigh to Washington D.C.:
We make our way through Virginia to Washington D.C., the nation’s capital. This afternoon we will tour Arlington National Cemetery, including the changing of the guard, the Kennedy gravesites and the Challenger Memorial. Tonight’s fascinating illuminations tour of Washington D.C. will introduce us to the many sites of the city including the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and Vietnam Memorial. Hotel (B,D)

Day 22 and 23 - Washington D.C. at Leisure:
Two full days to explore everything that Washington D.C. has to offer. You can see the White House, Capitol Building and Library of Congress. There is also plenty of time to visit the Smithsonian museums, such as The Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum and the Museum of American History - just to name a few. Day 24 - Washington D.C. to New York:
Before crossing the Potomac, you’ll have some time to see Annapolis – the capital of Maryland and home to the United States Naval Academy. We’ll have lunch in Philadelphia, where you can see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. We finally make our way to New York City, where your 24-day tour ends in the Big Apple late this afternoon.
