19 Day Camping Tour of Europe - London to Croatia

A shorter alternative to our “Totally Europe” expedition, this tour will show you the best of France and Italy, throw in a quick hop into Switzerland and still have time for six
fascinating days amid the medieval towns, stunning scenery and vibrant energy of Croatia and Slovenia!

PragueDay 1 - London – Ferry to Paris
Meeting in central London early in the morning, your tour leader will answer any initial questions and collect your ‘Local Fund’ payment in full in EURO€ cash. Departing London at 7am we head for Dover and board a ferry for France. From Calais we make our way across the French
countryside to the capital of romance – Paris. After dinner at our campsite we have a dazzling city tour which will introduce you to Montmartre, the Sacre Coeur and the beautiful skyline dominated by the twinkling lights of the Eiffel Tower. (D)

Day 2 - Paris
This morning we enjoy a driving tour of all the most famous spots from the Place de la Concorde to the Champs Elysee, Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Louvre. The rest of the day is free to choose which sights you wish to explore further before we gather at the foot of the Eiffel Tower for a sumptuous buffet picnic under this iconic monument. There’s also time for options like a famous cabaret or a cruise on the River Seine – a real must in Paris. (B,L,D)

Days 3-4 - Lauterbrunnen
Crossing into Switzerland our next stop is the alpine valley of Lauterbrunnen. Regarded as one of the most spectacular alpine valleys in Europe, the delightful Lauterbrunnen village is surrounded by the unspoilt snow capped Swiss Alps and has endless options for hiking and biking. Perhaps visit Switzerland’s highest waterfall, the cascading 300 metre Staubbach or jump on one of the many funicular railways which trace the mountainside. One of the most spectacular is the ride up to Jungfrau, the highest mountain in the area and the site of the highest train station in Europe. (Days 3&4 – B,L,D)

Day 5 - Avignon
A long day’s drive takes us to the romantic medieval walled city of Avignon on the banks of the Rhone River. The popes arrived in Avignon in the 14th Century and the city became a second Rome. Full of history, life, art and music, Avignon is so charming you won’t want to leave. We have a walking tour through the narrow streets inside the fortified walls and past the Palace of the Popes and the Pont St. Benezet. In the evening there are plenty of options to sample traditional French nightlife. (B,L,D)

Day 6 - French Riviera
Moving south we spend the night in Antibes living the high life on the classy Riviera. We visit a perfumery to watch the art of fragrance production and have an evening trip to Monaco to visit the world famous Monte Carlo casino and see the famed road based grand prix circuit. Why not imagine you’re a big spender and take a gamble on the roulette wheel or craps table. If you want to spend more time in Monaco you
can catch a train from the station close to our campsite earlier in the day. (B,L,D)

Day 7 - Cinque Terre
Crossing into Italy we head to the World Heritage Listed Cinque Terre (five lands). We stay in a campsite just a short train ride away from Cinque Terre. These unspoilt villages are
perched on the spectacular rocky eastern Liguarian coastline and offer a unique slice of Italian life. Pathways linking the villages weave through olive groves and vineyards and offer exceptional views of the coastline. (B,L,D)

Days 8-9 - Pisa - Florence
This is classical Italy! We travel via Pisa and its famous leaning tower – the beautiful bell tower of Pisa’s Duomo to the heart of Renaissance Italy. Florence swells with artistic and architectural treasures from the famous Duomo Cathedral
to Michelangelo’s David. We have a walking tour taking in the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, Santa Croce Church and some of the city’s beautiful piazzas and include a visit to a leather work craft show. You can spend the rest of your time strolling amongst luxury shops, bargain hunting in the San Lorenzo markets and eating! There’s no shortage of small trattorias tucked down side streets where you can snack on Tuscan specialities and drink cappuccino while soaking up this stylish city. (Day 8 – B,L,D, Day 9 – B,L)

Days 10-11 - Rome
Leaving Florence we travel to the Eternal City, home of the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain and some of the tastiest pizza you’ll ever try! However long you spend here it simply won't be enough so make sure you throw a coin or two over your shoulder into the Trevi Fountain – as it means you will return! On our walking tour you’ll see the Spanish Steps, the sprawling Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona and start to get an idea of the depth of history which seeps from every street. Take in some of the Michelangelo and Raphael’s remarkable art; stop in and see the Pope, St Peters and the brilliant Sistine Chapel at the Vatican City; lose yourself in the maze of backstreets; sit in grand open squares filled with entertainers and finish the day at a pavement cafe
with a bottle of chilled Frascati or fruity Chianti. (Day 10 – B,L, Day 11 – B,L,D)

Days 12-13 - Venice
Next we come to magical Venice. Built on water and criscrossed by canals, Venice is all about gondolas, romance, charm and a life never far from the water. We have a walking orientation tour of the highlights including the Rialto Bridge, St. Mark’s Basilica, Doges Palace and the Bridge of Sighs. We also include a glass blowing demonstration by Venetian craftspeople and then have plenty of free time to wander the backstreets of the real Venice, where baroque backstreet churches meet the waters edge and the tempting aroma of pizza and pasta will leave you constantly hungry. But if there’s one thing you must do before leaving, it’s grab a guy or girl, buy ice creams and serenade each other on a gondola! (Days 12&13 – B,L,D)

Day 14 - Ljubljana
We spend the next six days in the former Yugoslav republics of Slovenia and Croatia. First we head to Slovenia and the historic capital of Ljubljana (which means ‘beloved’ in Slovene!). After Yugoslavia split in 1991, Slovenia has prospered and Ljubljana is a delight to visit. Like a smaller Prague, but without the masses of visitors, Ljubljana has a vibrant air and good nightlife thanks to its student population. The Old Town below the castle is fantastic to wander around with a maze of narrow streets, many cafés, baroque churches and quaint bridges. Our walking tour includes the National Gallery, the Square of the Three Bridges, the Baroque City Hall, the Roman Ruins, and the 13th century castle. (B,L)

Day 15 - Plitvice National Park
Crossing into Croatia we head into an area of incredible natural beauty. Plitvice is one of Croatia’s most famous national parks – and for good reason! This stunning park is made up of 16 turquoise lakes, interconnected by waterfalls created by limestone deposits. These lakes and waterfalls are surrounded by dense forests of beech, fir and spruce, flower filled meadows and several caves and the area is home to several animal species. You can enjoy the magnificent scenery on walks through the national park. (B,L,D)

Days 16-17 - Dubrovnik
Heading into Southern Dalmatia we come to Dubrovnik, on the beautiful Adriatic coast. The old town is famed as one of the most perfectly preserved medieval towns in the world and its spellbinding streets and picture perfect location will blow you away! We have a walking tour
through the pedestrianised centre, characterised by narrow cobbled streets, small squares, ramparts, fortresses and red tiled houses. You can visit the Duke's Palace and the oldest pharmacy in the south of Europe, spend a few
hours wandering among the many churches, monasteries and museums or take a cruise out to the islands that dot the shoreline. For the best views of the city a walk along the town ramparts is an absolute must. Then when it’s time to wind down, pull up a chair in one of Dubrovnik’s taverns and take in the medieval atmosphere. (Day 16 – B,L,D, Day 17 – B,L)

Days 18-19 - Split
Travelling up the Dalmatian coastline we come to our final destination - Split. Bursting with history and culture, Split was born after the Palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian was built some 1700 years ago. The palace, situated in what was once a small fishing village between the mountains and the crystal waters of the Adriatic, became the centre of one of Croatia’s most beautiful cities. The palace remains the focal point of Split and more than 3000 people still live between its walls. There are museums and theatres to explore but if you need some fresh air you can’t go past a walk in the charming Marjan Forest Park (with excellent views of the old and new parts of the city) or some sun soaking on sandy Bacvice beach, located in the very heart of town. Your tour finishes after breakfast on Day 19. (Day 18 – B,L,D, Day 19 – B)
